Q and A with Jeff Mathews

How were you recruited?

Coach Riedmiller sent out film of me…to colleges around the nation. Cornell and other colleges then contacted me and communication started. I later went on an official visit to Cornell and then verbally committed to the University.

Did you apply to any other Ivy League schools?

I talked to Harvard, Penn, and Yale; but none had the feeling of Cornell.

Admissions to Ivy League schools aside, have you received any other awards for playing football?

I was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of [the school’s] team and our league as well. I was named to the All Ventura County team, the Ventura County Player of the Year (by Home Field Sports), and am a member of the All CIF team.

How long have you been playing football?

I have been playing football ever since I’ve been able to walk. I used to play catch with my dad and play games whenever the chance presented itself.  I have been playing organized football since fourth grade.

Do you wish to go to the NFL?

Ever since I have known about football, I have had a dream to play in the NFL.  Hopefully after college, I will get that opportunity.

Why did you start playing football?

My dad was a football player, and he always encouraged me to play—and of course, I did and have loved it ever since.

What other sports do you play?

I play basketball at Camarillo.

What college were you hoping to get into before Cornell contacted you?

I was a Notre Dame fan growing up, but most of all I just enjoyed watching college football.

How do you feel about going across the country for college?

I was born in Bozeman, Mo., and lived in Colorado until fourth grade, and my mom lives in Florida; so I have been well traveled and feel these experiences will help me at Cornell. Right now I am more excited than anything..

What do you intend to study, and what do you hope to be doing once you’re equipped with an education from Cornell?

I am entering Cornell as Undecided, but I intend to do something in business. I feel Cornell will set me up for a future in whatever I plan to do with my future.

Do you do any other extra curricular activities?

In my free time, which is rare, I enjoy hanging out with friends. I also enjoy helping other youngsters anytime possible. I help other young athletes with Fusion Football and YAC.

Who are the people to whom you attribute your success?

My dad is by far the biggest influence in my life and deserves most of the credit for my success. Coach Reidmiller and Coach Pinedo are two other people who have helped me tremendously in football but most importantly as a person. I would also like to thank the Tackett family who acted as my second family. John Diaz, Chris Thomas, and Bob Gagliano have helped me develop into a better football player through their guidance and expertise.
