Dance has hip-hopped its way to the school. The new dance team known as Ko-Ed is keeping dancing funky fresh with the members’ slick moves and upbeat tunes. Dance teams are on the rise. With shows, like So you Think You Can Dance and America’s Best Dance Crew, teens have become inspired to express themselves through dancing. However, dance teams are not anything new. Break dancing crews started in New York, when groups of people put together choreography and battled in the streets with other crews, creating new moves in the process. Crews would battle locally, within their neighborhood or city. However, dance crew battles have evolved into organized dance competitions, like America’s Best Dance Crew. Dance crews are a way to learn new dances, improve moves, and make friends.
At Cam high, the Ko-Ed dance team hopes to inspire students on campus to come out and dance. The team started as a bunch of friends who loved to dance. The friends saw that other schools in the district, like Oxnard High and Pacifica High, had organized dance teams and thought that they would be “down to make a dance crew” at Cam High. The team focuses on hip-hop and R&B choreography. They currently are performing at rallies and school events, and have other ideas for the future. Ko-Ed is not a competition team, but it hopes to become competitive and to participate in competitions next school year. The team also hopes to participate in community service projects, like inspiring younger kids to get up and move to the beat.
Ko-Ed dance crew recently held tryouts to add additional members to the team. One point seriously stressed by My Troung, a member of the dance team, was that everyone is to be included and all people are welcome to come and dance. Tryouts were held Dec. 15 through 17.
“[It was] pretty hard to choose”, said My Troung about selecting new members. The team added 14 new members, bringing the team to a total of 21.
