Cam High had it’s very own Mardi Gras celebration. Mardi Gras, actually means ’Fat Tuesday’ in French. On February 16, 2010 Cam High celebrated Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras is an age old tradition. Fat Tuesday is the start of Mardi Gras. It represents the last Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is a week of celebrating. Cities all around the world have their own traditions for Mardi Gras. In the United States Mardi Gras is predominately celebrated in cities that have French heritage. New Orleans is the most known for it’s Mardi Gras celebrations. The festivities include King Cakes. King Cakes are a cinnamon-roll cake that is covered in icing and Mardi Gras colored sprinkles. Inside of the cake is a little trinket that is usually of a baby to represent baby Jesus.
Cam High’s celebrations for Mardi Gras featured a large assortment of food and festivities provided from clubs, classes, and organizations around school. Some of the food there was pasta, from the senior class, Olas burritos, from the Stinger, D’Amore’s pizza and cupcakes, from the Gallery Club, and Johnny Rockets, form ASB. Also sold was chocolate covered strawberries from Cam High cheerleader’s, the junior class sold cotton candy, the Cam High short flags sold root beer floats, and the French club sold caramel apples.
There was also a variety of non-food items sold. There was head-garlands and face painting from the color guard. The No Hate club sold bracelets along with Dippin’ Dots. The Anime Club sold origami. Gallery Club member Jillian Schall said “We use our profits to buy more art supplies mainly for the AP Studio Art class.” Schall, a senior, also said that they use the money to restore Cam High’s very own gallery.
Cam High’s students had so many options for food that it truly was a Fat Tuesday. Senior, Kelsey Vandersande, was shocked at the variety of items to be purchased. Vandersande said “In my four years at Cam High this has been the best Mardi Gras.” Vandersande also said “I loved having all different things to eat. They should bring in food more often.”
